Get fast relief at these 5 reliable urgent care clinics in Malta
One weekend getaway turned from fun to frightening in a matter of minutes. A friend of ours suddenly fell ill with a high fever, and panic spread quickly through the group. Being far from home, in an unfamiliar area, only made the situation scarier.
We rushed to find urgent care in Malta, and those tense moments felt like hours. The staff welcomed us calmly, guiding us through the process while we hovered nervously nearby.
When our friend finally started to feel better, the relief washed over all of us. That day taught us the importance of knowing where to turn in emergencies and how quickly medical care can turn fear into comfort.
How much does urgent care cost in Malta?
Urgent care in Malta typically costs between €20 and €30 for a GP consultation at private clinics. Meanwhile, more specialised services such as blood tests or X-rays can range from €30 to €70. Private hospitals may charge higher fees, especially for emergency treatment outside regular hours.
1. St Thomas Hospital

Address: Triq Il-Belt Valletta, Ħal Qormi
Contact Details: +35621482482
Business Hours: Open 24/7
St Thomas Hospital in Qormi delivers a boutique-style medical experience paired with advanced technology. Established in 2013 with about 30 beds and now expanded to 40, it focuses on high-quality healthcare.
Its 24/7 emergency service has been a game-changer since 2016. It caters to non-life-threatening cases, often redirected from Mater Dei Hospital.
Consultant physicians and experienced surgeons are always available. Meanwhile, its imaging facilities, like CT scans and ultrasounds, allow same-day results for faster treatment.
One downside, though, is its limited capacity of about 15 beds for short stays or post-procedure observation. During busy periods, this can affect availability for patients needing brief recovery stays.
What really sets this hospital apart is its partnership with Malta’s public healthcare system. Performing around 2,000 to 2,500 surgeries yearly, it helps reduce waiting times for elective procedures while maintaining private-level service standards.
Guided professionally
“I wish to show my appreciation to the physiotherapist Alexandra, that from the post op of a total knee replacement, done at St Thomas Hosoital, , he guided me professionally. I wish him every success in his future endeavours and highly recommend him as a physiotherapist. I also wish to thank all the staff at St Tjomas Hospital for their professional work, caring and hospital. Maria Theresa Chircop”

Easy appointment scheduling
“Easy appointment scheduling and the dermatologist is an angel coming to Earth. I have suffered with my psoriasis and eczema for months now but due to his expertise, it is already almost completely gone. I can’t believe it because I have tired many medications but nothing else worked. I am more than relieved and I can finally feel comfortable in my skin again.”

2. Saint James Hospital

Address: George Borg Olivier St, Sliema SLM 1807
Contact Details: +35623291000
Business Hours: Open 24/7
Saint James Hospital has been around since 1984 and remains one of Malta’s most established healthcare providers. With branches in Sliema, Burmarrad, and an Eye Clinic in Birkirkara, accessibility is clearly one of its strengths.
Its facilities are modern, with more than 150 consulting physicians performing over 8,000 surgeries and delivering around 270,000 outpatient services yearly.
Patients can expect a full range of diagnostics, from CT scans to blood tests, without needing to transfer between clinics. It’s a setup that helps speed up consultations and treatment plans.
The Immediate Medical Care Units (IMCU) in Sliema and Żejtun operate 24/7, ideal for urgent but non-life-threatening cases. We appreciate that walk-ins are welcome, and triage is done immediately.
They also hold ISO 9001:2015 certification, marking it as the first multidisciplinary hospital in Malta to earn this distinction. The rooms have a luxury feel too, and the environment offers calm surroundings that make recovery more comfortable.
However, fees tend to be higher than in public hospitals, with GP consultations starting around €30. Those without private insurance might find ongoing care more expensive compared to government facilities.

3. Mater Dei Hospital

Address: WF2G+PH6, Triq Dun Karm, L-Imsida MSD 2090
Contact Details: +35625450000
Business Hours: Open 24/7
Mater Dei Hospital in Msida stands as Malta’s largest and most advanced medical facility, offering public healthcare and teaching services. It provides an extensive range of treatments, from cardiology to orthopaedics and oncology, all under one roof.
But something to note is that they are in high demand, which means it often leads to overcrowding, especially in the emergency department.
With over 1,200 beds and 25 operating theatres, the hospital is equipped to handle a high volume of patients daily. Its 24/7 accident & emergency department manages everything from minor injuries to critical trauma cases.
Top-notch diagnostic and laboratory services are available around the clock, including MRI and over 1,500 types of tests. These facilities allow for quick and accurate results, which are vital during emergencies and major operations.
The hospital’s specialised units, covering intensive care and neonatal emergencies, enhance its capacity to manage complex conditions effectively.
Accessibility is another advantage, as residents can access many of its services at little to no cost through Malta’s public healthcare system.
Doing the best they can with what they have
“Must give my utmost admire to the hospital staff in every department, including receptionists, guards and cleaners. They are doing the best they can with what they have. Sure 12 hours wait in the emergency but the hospital was full and kept on coming more and more all the time. Plus you get to meet people and share stories while waiting. Once you are with the staff you have their full dedication and I never felt mistreated. First look from the doctor in Triage, Door A, saw immediately I had some infection/inflammation in my intestines and got Colitis diagnosed and best care 👌.
People complaining dont know what the staff has to deal with and if the wait is long, there are Private hospitals to go to instead of giving 1 star reviews.
Keep up the good work and may God bless you all working there 🙏”

4. Gozo General Hospital

Address: Triq l-Arċisqof Pietru Pace, Ir-Rabat Għawdex VCT 2520
Contact Details: +35623446000
Business Hours: Open 24/7
Gozo General Hospital has long served as the island’s main healthcare hub, catering to both residents and tourists since 1975. With 303 beds divided between acute, long-term, and psychiatric care.
Its 24/7 emergency department stands out, with doctors on duty round the clock and an efficient triage system to ensure timely care. The hospital also follows a formal service charter, where non-urgent patients are typically seen within an hour.
Recent refurbishments have also upgraded the emergency departments, improving comfort and efficiency. Access to advanced cardiac CT and MRI scans on the island also means fewer trips to Malta for specialised imaging.
But being on a separate island does bring a few challenges. In critical emergencies requiring specialist intervention, transferring can face delays due to sea or air conditions.
Still, Gozo General Hospital remains essential for the community, supported by upgraded ambulances and diverse clinical services that keep island healthcare reliable and accessible.
Efficient testing and results
“Excellent staff – surgeons, GPs, nurses, carers, housekeeping. Emergency works with the 1-5 (most-least urgent) scale, and you don’t know the number assigned to you, but the queue moves rather fast. There’s a cute cat called Antida which will keep you company while you wait, anyway. Efficient testing+ results. Food: interesting texture – chicken ate 4 times on repeat and didn’t mind, delicious carrots. I just only didn’t get the broth – was that onion? Don’t want to go to the hospital again, for obvious reasons, but if I or someone I love has to in the future I’ll come here. P.s. do not try to sneak outside post-op, it’s not allowed without supervision.”

Attention and knowledge were exemplary
“As tourists worried about receiving subpar treatment, Dr. Arianna at Gozo General Hospital’s Emergency Department proved us wrong.
Though there was +1 hour wait, her attention and knowledge were exemplary. She managed our concerns efficiently, answered all our questions thoroughly, and never rushed us. We had the attention of multiple doctors and felt well cared for. Highly recommend her and the team for dependable emergency care in Gozo.”

5. Good Samaritan Hospital

Address: Sir Luigi Preziosi Square St. Paul’s Bay St. Paul’s Bay, SPB 2716
Contact Details: +35621585808
Business Hours: Monday to Sunday: 7 AM – 7 PM
Good Samaritan Hospital in St. Paul’s Bay brings a modern touch to private healthcare, opening its purpose-built facility in 2020. It has 128 beds, with wheelchair-accessible rooms ranging between 22.5 to 29 square metres.
We found the environment calm and efficient, with 24-hour medical and nursing coverage that keeps care well-coordinated. Daily ward rounds from consultants make it suitable for both short-term patients and those requiring longer recovery.
During the pandemic, the hospital proved its flexibility by accommodating elderly and COVID-19 patients through government contracts. It continues to handle outsourced surgical operations, which is a rare arrangement among private facilities.
It’s also convenient that they offer walk-in health screenings and physiotherapy sessions, especially for those staying around the northern coast.
The location makes it ideal for tourists and residents in nearby Bugibba who prefer faster, more personalised service.
The only drawback is that it lacks a full-scale emergency department like Mater Dei. As a result, major trauma cases must be transferred elsewhere, which limits its emergency capabilities.
Impressed by the dedicated care and attention
“I was hospitalized for three days at the Good Samaritan Hospital, Room 305. I was truly pleased and impressed with the dedicated care and heartful attention I received from each member of staff be it the Doctors, the nurses and helpers and the cleaners. The patience and compassion I experienced made my stay so much less stressful and speeded up my recovery. Thank you all for being so caring and kind.”
