The 5 best law firms in Malta that will successfully represent you in court

  • Licensing and Certifications: I only worked with lawyers registered with the Chamber of Advocates and holding a Maltese Doctor of Law degree.
  • Specialisations: I selected law firms that handle common cases, such as divorce, assault charges, and residency matters.
  • Extent of Track Record: I selected law firms with high success rates, recommended by several clients, both online and through word of mouth.
  • Communication and Approachability: I chose law firms that consistently provide clients with updates and answer any questions they may have about their case.

A good friend told me that a great lawyer will do anything to help out their client, and choosing the right firm is the key to success.

While there are several law firms in Malta, only a few stand out due to their success rates and specialisations. While you may not always need a lawyer, knowing which firm to call can make all the difference.

I’ve spoken to several expats and locals and pooled together a list for those who might need a lawyer while living in or visiting Malta.

How much does a lawyer charge in Malta?

While fees vary greatly from case to case, lawyers in Malta typically charge between €500 and €1,500. These fees can easily increase or decrease depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s specialisation, and potential consultation fees.

Global Immigration Partners provides multiple pathways to residency and citizenship, making them an excellent choice for foreign nationals looking to settle in Malta. Based in Iklin, their team of experienced immigration and visa attorneys ensures a smooth and convenient process.

They are a large firm, having offices and clients across 30 countries. Additionally, they have helped over 2,000 clients with investments and immigration.

Two types of residency are available to clients at Global Immigration Partners—the Permanent Residence Programme and the Global Residence Programme.

The former is best for EU citizens and must have investments in Malta. The latter, on the other hand, is best for non-EU citizens.

As for citizenship, these can be obtained through naturalisation, marriage, and descent. These can all be processed through them with great efficiency, with little to no hassle for clients.

However, I find that their administrative fees are quite steep, costing around €50,000 for the main applicant and €10,000 for dependents. Still, it’s reasonable for the level of expertise and guidance they provide.

Pros

  • Has offices across 30 countries
  • Large firm
  • Worked with over 2,000 clients
  • Easy process for residency and citizenship

Cons

  • Steep administrative fees

Natalino Caruana De Brincat is a successful Doctor of Law with a Master’s in Business Administration. He and his team are excellent at representing clients in human rights, employment, and international law cases.

They are a small firm of three with a high success rate. They can represent local clients in Industrial Tribunals and the Court of Voluntary Jurisdiction, and work with expats on cases involving international entities.

However, they only take a few cases at a time because they are a small firm.

Nonetheless, before cases can even reach the courts, they try their best to resolve them and find common ground between the parties. Clients who have negotiated with them report fairness for both parties and the protection of their clients’ rights.

It doesn’t end there, as the legal team can also help with immigration and residency, which can be handy for expats looking to migrate to Malta.

Pros

  • Led by a Doctor of Law
  • Covers a wide range of practices
  • Experienced in negotiations
  • Can help with immigration

Cons

  • Only takes a few cases at a time

One of Malta’s larger firms, Chetcuti Cauchi Advocates, provides legal, immigration, and tax services to clients. Based in Valletta, they have helped multiple businesses get a foothold in the Maltese market.

Established in 2002, they have been led by Dr Jean-Philippe and Dr. Maria Chetcuti Cauchi. Both are senior private lawyers specialising in global citizenship and residency.

Chetcuti Cauchi Advocates’ practice encompasses the integration of international wealth into Malta through its partial ownership by its lawyers. This process makes wealth transfer easy and also allows clients to apply for citizenship or residency.

They also excel at representing clients in contract law cases and dispute resolution. As for the industries they service, they are mainly known for working with AI companies, high-net-worth individuals, and manufacturers.

However, because they work with wealthy clients, their services aren’t suited to basic disputes due to their higher fees.

Pros

  • Over 20 years of service
  • Led by senior lawyers
  • Specialises in establishing businesses in Malta
  • Works with a wide range of individuals

Cons

  • Unfit for basic disputes

The team has excellent knowledge on subject matters

“It has been an absolute pleasure to work with CCLEX and team for our consultation requirments. Especially Ms Pauline is such a breeze to work with, she has gone out of the way multiple times to assist us and we are extremely grateful. The team has excellent knowledge on subject matters, is prompt, understanding and hands on. I must mention how the Managing Partner, Dr Jean-Phillip Chetcuti himself has been so active and involved in matters which is rare to see in such big law firms. We are extremely grateful to the full team.”

I feel extremely lucky to have found CC Advocates

“I feel extremely lucky to have found CC Advocates. From the very beginning I was treated with real warmth and professionalism, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the results. I’d like to give a special mention to Dr Danielle Mercieca and Dr Michela Seychell, who are both incredibly talented and experts in their fields. The attention to detail and the amount of work that must have gone into everything is evidently clear. I cannot recommend this firm highly enough, and I won’t look elsewhere if CC Advocates can help.”

Their lawyers are trained for today’s economic environment and are experts in both local and international business practices. Additionally, they have backgrounds in Maltese and European law, enabling them to represent clients across the EU.

They are also experts at property negotiations. A multitude of clients have used their service to secure better deals for residential, commercial, and industrial properties. Aside from that, they can finalise purchases and permits, which is quite handy.

From what I have heard from clients, Calleja & Associates Advocates provides thorough GDPR support, making complex EU data protection rules much easier to navigate.

I was impressed that they can even represent clients in Food Law-related incidents, which is a rare niche and is highly regulated by the Maltese government.

However, it is advisable to contact them in advance, as communication may be inconsistent on particularly busy days.
