The 5 best water sports equipment rental services in Malta for a seamless coastal experience

Equipment Quality and Variety: I chose rental services that have up-to-date equipment and have a variety to choose from, such as snorkel gear, diving gear, and jet skis.

Safety Protocols: I selected rental services that comply with the Malta Tourism Authority and also mandate the buddy system.

Cost Transparency: I chose rental services that are upfront about rental costs and don’t incur hidden fees.

Customer Support: I chose rental services that offer strong customer support for accidental damage or faulty equipment.

Reviews and Reputation: I specifically analysed online and word-of-mouth reviews for each rental service to better understand their capabilities and services.

Malta is simply a joy to explore. While the cities are wonderful, the best locations are in the waves. But finding rentals can be difficult, especially when it comes to equipment quality.

Well, the good thing is that the best water sports equipment rental services in Malta will always carry everything that you’ll need. From snorkels to extra oxygen tanks, they should have them all and rent them for a reasonable price.

So, I’ve gathered the best ones that I could find through local knowledge and the opinions of friendly tourists. With their services, exploring the waters surrounding the island will be a breeze.

How much does it cost to rent water sports equipment in Malta?

Renting water sports equipment in Malta costs €40 to €175, depending on the duration. The price will depend entirely on the type of equipment rented, any add-ons, and the day the equipment was rented.

Established by the Vassallo family in 1986, Gnejna Watersports is one of Malta’s finest water sports centres. Located near the breathtaking Gnajna Bay, they offer clients several different ways to enjoy the waves.

Their services cover typical water sports equipment, such as kayaks and banana rides, that is fairly priced at €8 to €12 for 15 minutes to an hour. They also offer diving and snorkelling services that allow you to explore a plane wreck from the Second World War.

There are also boats available for rent at around €60 for an hour—fuel included. A unique offering is their speedboats, which cost €100 per hour. There are even self-driven boats that can handle up to 4 people.

Their beach facilities are a perfect place to stay after exploring the waves, with beach chairs and umbrellas.

However, all of their items must be used in Gnajna Bay alone, which is limiting.

Pros

  • Over 30 years of service
  • Family-run business
  • Wide range of water sports equipment
  • Fairly priced services
  • Boats include fuel
  • Great beach facilities

Cons

  • Items restricted to Gnajna Bay use only

The staff was kind and helpful

“We visited the beach in october. We decided to visit the Ta’ Marija Cave in a two person kayak. The sea was calm, there was almost no waves. The staff was kind and helpful. I read other reviews about scary experiences with the waves after leaving the harbour. We did not experience that. It is a great activity if you visit this bay.”

– Anna Gaál, Google Review

It was a very quick process

“We rented two kayaks from here for two hours and it was a very quick and easy process. Kayaks were €7 per hour so very affordable. We paid and basically immediately were out into life jackets and on the kayaks. They also had umbrellas to rent here for €6”

For an extreme experience, I’d go for Aquamarine Watersports. With over 55 years of experience in operating water sports equipment, they’re known for their thrilling experiences that are rivalled by none.

They have the usual kayaks and paddle boats, which are fairly priced at around €15 to €45, depending on the type rented. I love their Crazy Sofa Ride, which combines comfort and thrills as you ride through the waves.

The main star of the show is their jet skis. These can be rented for 20 minutes to 1.5 hours and are reasonably priced at around €70-€175. Booking them is easy and can be done online.

There’s also their fantastic parasailing service and scuba diving, which let you explore Golden Bay with an instructor.

However, you have to take note that their services are often closed during the island’s off-season.

Pros

  • Over 55 years of service
  • Focuses on extreme water sports
  • Wide range of rentable equipment
  • Fairly priced

Cons

  • Closed during off-seasons

The service was impeccable

“I was pleasantly surprised! These days, when entertainment options are endless and it’s hard to be impressed, they truly stood out — not with flashy tricks, but with genuine care and attention. The service was impeccable, and the quality of the experience was outstanding. I truly appreciate it and wholeheartedly recommend them!”

They have a great range of well-organised activities

“We had a fantastic experience with Aquamarine Watersports. They have a great range of well-organized activities, which made our time at Golden Bay truly memorable. The boat trip to Comino and Gozo was a definite highlight, and the parasailing was also a lot of fun. Highly recommended!”

Malta Jet Ski Rental makes the jet ski experience easy. Located in the small island of Comino, clients can expect to experience the lush and wonderful turquoise waters of Blue Lagoon.

Renting with them doesn’t require a license, and their equipment is constantly updated to the latest jet skis, life jackets, and snorkels. I like that they’re a family-run business that truly understands the unique nature of water sports in Malta.

Renting with them is reasonably priced at around €25 to €65 for a 10-minute to 30-minute ride. This includes a reliable safety briefing, storage for belongings, and fuel.

If riding wildly isn’t your style, there are jet ski tours that take clients across Cirkewwa, costing €119 to €199 for an hour or a two-hour tour, respectively.

However, due to the large number of clients that they handle, they may forget to reply on WhatsApp. I’d suggest emailing them instead.

Pros

  • Accessible Comino location
  • Doesn’t require a jet ski license
  • Focuses on jet skis
  • Reasonably priced
  • Offers jet ski tours

Cons

  • Instances of miscommunication

They will take the right care and give instructions for proper safety

“The Jetski company is extremely professional and supportive for tourists! They will take right care and give instructions for proper safety of jetski! Recommended from Gozo as well as Malta mainland!”

– Kaushal Gala, Google Review

Loved it from start to finish

Rather than focusing on snorkelling and diving, Rush Watersports prefers jet skis and boats. They explore several different locations in San Giljan, from St. Paul’s Bay to the North of Blue Lagoon.

Their rentals focus on renting the world-leading jet ski brand Sea-Doo. They make the process easy, requiring no experience for those who want to use their jet skis. However, I was a bit disappointed that these are quite expensive, at around €50-€75 per ride.

Other water sports they offer include their sea-doo safari and self-drive boats, which cost €375 and €275, respectively.

What they’re truly known for are their larger vessels, such as boats. Yet again, the rentals are expensive, costing thousands for an 8-hour duration. But these already include a skipper and fuel.

I value that they carry notable models like the Bavaria C42 and the Axopar 37 ST.

Pros

  • Focuses on boats and jet skis
  • Charming San Giljan location
  • Uses Sea-Doo jet skis
  • Wide range of boat options
  • Flexible long-term hire

Cons

  • Expensive rental service

Highly recommended if you’re looking for some fun on the water

“I had an amazing time at Rush Watersports! Riding the jet skis was such a cool experience, and all the equipment was in great condition. The staff were super friendly and very helpful, which made everything even better. Highly recommended if you’re looking for some fun on the water!”

– Adolf Thyssen, Google Review

Very professional and prepared

“Very professional and prepared. Excellent experience. All young men with a Military demeanor and a young lady that was very courteous. I felt like the equipment was safe and in great working order. Rented a jet ski one day and returned the next for a small boat for a day. It turned into an experience to remember for a long time. I was able to deploy my drone from the boat! It was awesome!”

Bluewaves Watersports has over 30 years of experience in water sports rentals. They’re a pioneer in Malta’s water sports industry, offering services across the island rather than just in select areas.

Their services primarily focus on boats that accommodate 2 to 6 people. These are self-drive boats that don’t require a boat license, but boat experience is necessary. They also require drivers to be at least 25 years of age.

Aside from these, I like that there are private personal boat rides with an expert skipper. These can house up to 10 people and can last up to 4 hours.

They also offer top-notch jet ski services, which include fuel and a short wetsuit. Additionally, visitors can even enjoy captivating tours that explore Gozo and Comino’s historical landmarks.

However, they occasionally overbook, so be sure to call beforehand.

Pros

  • Over 30 years of expertise
  • Focuses on boats and jet skis
  • Extensive amenities
  • Wide range of boat choices
  • Offers captivating Gozo and Comino tours

Cons

  • Instances of overbooking

I had a great experience

“I had a great experience! I took the fast boat to comino and it was so fun , Agostino our boat driver makes all the difference.

He makes you enjoy the ride even more. The ride was safe , fun , on time! I’ll do it again for sure

Thank you”

Very safe and had great staff on the boat

“Had so much fun going to comino bay and some other spots! Very safe and had great staff on the boat, cheap food and drinks too. We rented snorkels and masks which made it so fun too

We stayed on the boat at the blue lagoon which I recommend as the shore looked crowded with little shade – but the boat was perfect! Thanks!”
