1. ShiroJudoKwai

Website: shirojudokwai.eu
Address: 117, Triq San Mikiel, Fgura, Malta
Contact: 99437290
Hours: Monday, Thursday 6–9 pm, Tuesday, Wednesday 6–7 pm; Saturday 9–11 am
ShiroJudoKwai offers a structured training environment led by Head Coach Joseph Castillo, who holds a PhD in Diagnostic Radiography.
The program follows the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) methodology. This focuses on steady, sustainable progress rather than short-term results.
We believe this approach makes it especially appealing for families, particularly since the school welcomes very young children through its “Tiny Tumble Judo” program for toddlers as young as two.
The academy also provides a consistent year-round activity that keeps students physically active beyond seasonal programs like summer camps.
The only downside is that they operate out of a single facility, which might require a longer commute for those living in the northern part of the island.
The program also focuses strictly on judo, which may not suit families looking for a broader mix of martial arts styles.

2. Avant-Garde BJJ Malta

Website: https://avantgardebjj.mt/
Address: No 4 Triq Gerolamo Gianni San Ġwann, SGN 3500
Contact: 35699000255 | [email protected]
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8 am–9 pm; Saturday, 8 am–3 pm; Sunday, 10 am–2 pm
Avant-Garde BJJ Malta delivers high-level grappling instruction built on a strong lineage and proven methodology.
As an official Cobrinha BJJ affiliate, the academy connects students to one of the most respected training systems in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This gives students confidence that they’re learning techniques rooted in competitive success.
The facility itself reinforces that professional feel. The expansive 350-square-meter mat space provides ample room for safe movement. They also offer premium recovery amenities, including a sauna and an ice bath.
I remember stepping onto the mats for the first time and immediately noticing how organized and focused the environment felt.
They also run a highly structured monthly beginner intake that removes the intimidation factor for newcomers by starting everyone on the same page.
However, this rigid schedule means you can’t just drop in and start your fundamentals training on any random day of the week.
Plus, this academy focuses entirely on grappling disciplines, so individuals seeking striking arts will need to look elsewhere.
Customer Reviews
What can I say, Avant Garde was a brilliant choice to go to for a couple of training sessions while on holiday in Malta. A friendly welcome for me dropping in and a beautiful facility to train in with a very high level of jiu jitsu on show.
I’ll definitely be back again the next time I’m on the islands and highly recommend it for any travelling BJJ enthusiasts

3. Malta School of Wushu

Website: http://schoolofwushu.com/
Address: 44 Triq Carini, Santa Venera
Contact: +356 7993 8769
Hours: Kung Fu Fri 07:40 PM & Sat 04:30 PM; Tai chi Quan Mon 07:40 PM & Wed 07:40 PM; Kids Mon 07:40 PM & Wed 07:40 PM
The Malta School of Wushu stands out as a place dedicated to preserving traditional Chinese martial arts in a modern training environment. It was founded by Gino Dalcielo and guided by Grandmaster Shifu Maurizio Zanetti.
The academy focuses on authentic, traceable disciplines that emphasize both physical skill and cultural heritage.
Students can choose Kung Fu training to build strength, coordination, and discipline. Alternatively, they can join Tai Chi sessions that focus on controlled movement and meditative flow.
The school also maintains a strong cultural connection through its partnership with the China Cultural Centre. They introduce students to traditional elements such as Dragon and Lion Dance performances.
The primary drawback is that training heavily prioritizes forms over the high-intensity, full-contact sparring found in mixed martial arts gyms.
Additionally, their central hub in Santa Venera might be less convenient for coastal residents.

My son has been attending Kung-Fu for the past few years and I have nothing but praise for this school. Shifu is fantastic with the kids and through his teachings, they don’t just learn Kung-Fu but also other values and skills for life. He is very dedicated and truly cares about his students. I am very grateful that my son forms part of this wonderful community.

Hours: Monday, Wednesday to Friday, 6:30–9 pm; Tuesday, 6–9 pm; Saturday, 7–10 am
Malta Thaiboxing delivers a gritty, no-frills training environment that reflects the roots of authentic combat sports.
Founded in 2010 as the island’s first dedicated Muay Thai club, the gym embraces a raw, do-it-yourself atmosphere where discipline and hard work take priority over flashy amenities.
We had the chance to watch their “iron sharpens iron” philosophy in action, where total beginners and seasoned fighters share the same mats to hold each other accountable.
It’s a highly motivating environment, made even more welcoming by the presence of their three rescue gym cats. Because the facility fully embraces its minimalist vibe, you won’t find luxury locker rooms or rows of modern cardio machines here.
The curriculum is also strictly limited to Muay Thai. They offer no grappling or alternative striking options for those wanting a broader combat education.
Customer Reviews
Very good gym for all experience levels. Coach Shaun is a very good trainer who will challenge you to push the limits. He takes time for each student to explain techniques, drills etc. and will point out strengths and weaknesses to improve. The overall atmosphere in the gym is very good. Everyone is very respectful and kind but also direct when something does not go as expected.
10/10 experience, very recommendable

Mgarr Karate Club is a reliable option for students who value safe and structured physical conditioning because of their focus on proper biomechanics.
Training is led by Sensei Luke Galea. He’s a professional physiotherapist who carefully designs movements to reduce injury risk and promote long-term physical health.
The instructional team includes black belts with notable international competition experience, which adds a high level of technical depth to every session.
Students are also introduced to the Japanese concept of resilience, encouraging perseverance and mental discipline both inside and outside the dojo.
Beyond martial arts, the facility doubles as a broader wellness center. They offer fitness classes and even an on-site equipment shop for added convenience.
That said, the curriculum remains strictly focused on traditional karate, so students interested in cross-training in other martial arts may need additional gyms. The club’s location in Mgarr can also require a longer commute for residents living in the southern districts.

Mgarr Karate Club has been a part of my son’s life for over five years. He always looks forward to each session and every activity held by the Club.
