The 5 Best Indian Restaurants in Malta for a Little Spice and a Lot of Nice

Authentic Techniques. A curry house is only as good as its kitchen methods, so we avoided cutting corners with generic spice powders. We checked if the chefs use traditional tandoor clay ovens and slow-simmer their gravies.

Menu Variety - Mixed groups rarely want the same thing, so a broad menu is essential for a stress-free dinner. We looked for kitchens that balance standard meat curries with solid vegetarian, vegan, or even fusion choices.

Spice Customisation - Nothing ruins a meal faster than a vindaloo you can barely swallow, or a korma that tastes like plain milk. We noted which spots let you actively adjust the chilli heat of your dish when ordering.

Dietary Accommodations - We verified which venues offer clear gluten-free, keto, and strictly halal-certified options.

Service Accessibility. A great dinner is useless if you can never get a table when you actually want one. We checked their operating hours, booking platforms, and whether they serve lunch alongside evening service.

When you’re planning a memorable romantic getaway with your partner, sharing a flavourful dinner is the perfect highlight.

And that’s where the best Indian restaurants in Malta come in. Indian food is the ultimate comfort food when you want something satisfying and flavourful.

Luckily, the city’s culinary scene is packed with intense spices and comforting textures that’ll blow your mind.

To help you out, we’ve rounded up the must-visit spots you’ll want to try, so read on!

Address: Triq Sant Antnin, San Pawl il-Baħar

Contact: +356 99 232 404

Hours: Monday-Sunday, 12:30 PM – 11:00 PM

A good ethnic restaurant that pleases both purists and picky eaters can be hard to find. New Delhi Indian Cuisine makes it easier by serving traditional clay tandoor dishes alongside wok-tossed Hakka noodles and even Maltese ravioli.

This variety comes in handy when you’re travelling with tourists who want a spicy feast and friends who would rather have pasta.

The open kitchen lets you watch the chefs pull fresh, steaming naan straight from the tandoor.

They also serve rib-eye beef curries, which are a rare find at typical Indian restaurants.

During a visit, one diner shared that the staff asked how much chilli heat they wanted in their tikka masala. This thoughtful touch makes it easier for spice-sensitive guests to enjoy their meal comfortably.

However, the European menu additions might feel distracting to strict traditionalists.

Pros

  • Offers diverse dishes for every palate
  • Serves authentic tandoor-cooked Indian specialities
  • Customisable spice levels for comfort
  • Fresh naan prepared in an open kitchen

Cons

  • European dishes may distract traditionalists

Food is amazing!

I had the pleasure of tasting several dishes  with my friends in New Delhi week ago. Every single dish was delicious. Week later and I am back! The staff was super friendly and helpful. I am a vegan and they made sure I will be looked after. If you want Indian – this is the place to go to! Food is amazing! Also their cocktails are lovely. Prices are reasonable. 100% recommend!

Everything arrived fresh and well prepared

We visited with four adults and two children and had a great experience. The staff was very friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit. The food was absolutely delicious, with authentic flavors and generous portions. An interesting detail is that the kitchen is located in the kebab restaurant across the street, but this did not affect the quality or service at all. Everything arrived fresh and well prepared. If you’re looking for tasty Indian food and warm hospitality, this place is definitely worth a visit. Highly recommended!

2. Naan Bar

Website: naanbar.com

Address: 60/1 Melita Street, on the corner of Old Bakery Street, Il-Belt Valletta

Contact: +356 21242886 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Friday, 5:00 PM – 11:00 PM | Saturday-Sunday, 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM, 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Dietary limits often mean settling for a bland side dish while everyone else gets a feast. Naan Bar changes that rule by designing specific keto, gluten-free, and strict halal-certified dishes that actually taste incredible.

That matters deeply for vegetarians and vegans who want a rich, layered dal makhani without constantly asking the waiter to check the ingredients.

The cooking here feels highly refined, driven by chefs who trained at luxury hotels across India.

If you book the lower-ground chef’s table, you can sit right by the show kitchen and watch them assemble regional tasting menus.

Their bartenders also mix up custom cocktails inspired by subcontinental spices.

The catch is that on weekdays, they only open for dinner at 5:00 PM, skipping the midday crowd entirely.

Pros

  • Covers vegan, keto, and halal diets
  • Luxury-trained culinary team
  • Customisable spice profiles
  • Interactive chef’s table viewing

Cons

  • No weekday lunch service

Exceptional Indian food

Exceptional Indian food.  Fresh, Flavorful and Exquisitely Prepared.  My favorite meals in Malta. I went two nights in a row to make sure I was able to try different items. Highlights include the Nimona Kebab, Kachumber Salad, Mushroom Matar, Fish Curry, Beetroot Tikki and the Naan breads. I would have eaten here again if time permitted.

It was hands-down the best Indian meal I’ve ever had

I have been to Naan Bar before and it was always excellent, but our experience today was truly amazing—the menu seems to have improved even more since my last visit! It was hands-down the best Indian meal I’ve ever had.

We visited with a group that had varied dietary needs, including my diabetic mother who needed lighter, low-fat options, and the menu accommodated everyone perfectly. The Chicken Tikka, Royal Flame Prawn, and the Kachumber salad as appetizers were fresh and very flavorsome. For mains, the Munnar Chicken Curry, Bengali Fish Curry, and the Kashmiri Rogan Josh were incredibly rich

Hours: Monday-Tuesday, 2:00 PM – 11:00 PM | Wednesday-Saturday, 1:00 PM – 11:00 PM | Sunday, 12:00 PM – 11:00 PM

BlueFrog Indian Restaurant focuses entirely on Mumbai street food, bringing those specific, sizzling regional spices straight to the table.

Food enthusiasts will appreciate trying authentic roadside classics rather than just another standard bowl of korma.

Their automated booking system handles busy nights brilliantly. If the dining room is full, you can join a digital waitlist that automatically pings you the second someone cancels.

You can also adjust your party size or shift your booking online without calling the staff, saving you a massive headache on a busy Friday.

Unfortunately, their strict regional focus means diners craving broader Goan or Punjabi specialities won’t find them here.

Pros

  • Authentic Mumbai street food focus
  • Distinctive regional spices and flavors
  • Convenient automated reservation system
  • Flexible online booking modifications

Cons

  • Limited menu beyond Mumbai cuisine

The Indian food was delicious

The Indian food was delicious. The flavors were authentic, and everything was well prepared. I definitely recommend it! I was especially pleased that the dishes weren’t overloaded with coriander, which made the flavors even more enjoyable for me

The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, and the food was consistently excellent

Absolutely delicious food and warm service!

We visited this Indian restaurant three times during our two-week holiday in Malta – it quickly became our favorite spot! The staff were always friendly, welcoming, and gave us great recommendations. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, and the food was consistently excellent – fresh, authentic, and full of flavor.

Highly recommended if you’re looking for great Indian cuisine in a warm and easygoing setting!

4. New Madras Indian Restaurant

Address: 3 Triq il Gondoffli, Bugibba, St Paul’s Bay

Contact: +356-2157-2107 | +356-9929-8138 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Saturday, 6:30 PM – 11:30 PM | Sunday, 12:00 PM – 2:30 PM, 6:30 PM – 11:30 PM

At New Madras Indian Restaurant, the staff make things easier by recommending carefully selected wines that pair well with their spicy Southern Indian curries.

This lets you enjoy the bold flavours of authentic Chettinadu cooking without worrying about your drink clashing with the garlic and coconut.

They also stand out for their attention to detail. Chef Muthu creates his own spice blends in-house instead of relying on pre-mixed powders, giving each curry a fresher, richer taste.

Plus, they use fresh local fish in traditional Malabar seafood dishes, combining Mediterranean ingredients with Indian clay pot cooking techniques.

However, dinner service starts at 6:30 PM, which might be too late for families with hungry kids.

Thankfully, the restaurant offers a special Sunday lunch for those who prefer an earlier meal.

Pros

  • Expert wine and food pairings
  • Authentic Chettinadu flavours and spices
  • House-made spice blends for freshness
  • Tender slow-roasted tandoori meats

Cons

  • Dinner service starts relatively late
  • Late 6:30 PM dinner start

Really good customer service and the food was great as well

Our waiter Pandi was amazing throughout. Really good customer service and the food was great as well. We ordered chicken tandoori, aloo paratha, lamb madras, mango lassi and for dessert pista kulfi and gulab jamun. A must visit Indian restaurant on the island! ☺️✨🫶🏽

Delicious flavours and so many authentic options

Top notch Indian food! Delicious flavours and so many authentic options to choose from- we were 5 people, got a meat dish each, 2 rice and 3 naan and we were all satisfied (and a bottle of moscato!) It cost us around 25eur each. Only thing i would’ve gotten was an extra naan cause you can never have enough naan 😅

5. Bombay Masala Malta

Website: bombaymasalamalta.com

Address: 29 Triq Il Pagell Bugibba, San Pawl Il Bahar

Contact: +356 7714 5128 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Friday, 2:00 PM – 11:00 PM | Saturday-Sunday, 12:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Heavy cravings for red meat usually send people looking for the best steakhouses, but an intensely spiced curry can be just as satisfying.

Bombay Masala Malta dedicates an entire menu section to rich beef dishes like Madras and Vindaloo. Tender, slow-cooked beef cubes alongside traditional vegetarian dishes make choosing a restaurant much easier for a divided group.

Their kitchen goes the extra mile on the small details that matter. They simmer their dal makhani overnight for a velvety texture and craft their own cottage cheese in-house instead of buying frozen blocks.

On top of that, you can order authentic street snacks like crispy pani puri, which are incredibly rare to find prepared this well on the island.

The frustrating part is their limited drink menu, which only features lassi variations and skips hot options like masala chai entirely.

Pros

  • Extensive selection of rich beef curries
  • Tender, slow-cooked beef dishes
  • Freshly made paneer and dal makhani
  • Authentic Indian street food snacks

Cons

  • Limited drinks without hot beverage options

Would definitely recommend!

I’m from India living in Belgium and I normally don’t like Indian restaurants in Europe however this has got to be my favourite one so far! Loved the food, and the service was great. Would definitely recommend!

Really nice service

Service 5/5

Food 5/5

Really nice service. The guy welcomed us, gave us recommendations, and served us at the top level.

We wandered what to eat, as a first time trying Indian food, and he explained to us everything. What to expect, and what it will fit most as a side dish. We took every single piece of advice, and we were not disappointed.

We took shrimp curry, fish masala, rice with veggies as side dishes, and two Indian beers.
