The 5 Best Pastry Shops in Malta for Sweet Treats and Local Bites

Baking Techniques: We looked for kitchens that honor traditional, hands-on methods like heritage wood ovens or patient dough resting.

Relying on authentic techniques ensures the final product delivers a superior texture and a richer flavor profile.

Ingredient Sourcing: Our evaluation prioritized spots that actively secure fresh, seasonal produce from regional farmers. Utilizing local harvests means every bite captures the true, vibrant taste of the island's natural offerings.

A broad selection guarantees that both busy commuters and meticulous party hosts find exactly what they need.

Crafting everything from scratch in-house without relying on pre-made mixes is a non-negotiable standard at Marie Boutique Patisserie. That way, they ensure an unmatched level of freshness that easily elevates them above typical bakeries.

Their kitchen masterfully balances classic baking practices with contemporary pastry innovations. They produce visually breathtaking creations that honor local heritage while satisfying modern palates.

Because they place a massive emphasis on sourcing seasonal produce based on the current harvest, their fruit tarts consistently feature the most vibrant, ripest components available.

They also treat the resting and aging of doughs as a crucial, unhurried process, yielding a depth of flavor that’s truly remarkable for anyone exploring cake shops in Malta

The only slight hurdle for securing these impeccable desserts is their strict lead-time policy, which completely rules out spontaneous, last-minute custom cake orders. Still, the sheer craftsmanship makes planning ahead entirely worthwhile.

Pros

  • Event-ready cake presentation
  • Diverse, sophisticated flavor profiles
  • Festive holiday hampers available
  • Authentic traditional local recipes

Cons

  • Requires advance notice for custom orders

Best Pastries and Polite Staff

Best place for pastries on the whole island! Also the lunch was very tasty (we had soup and focaccia). But of course the pastries are the reason to stop by. Also the staff is worth a visit, very nice and polite. We enjoyed our stay a lot!

Amazing Lemon and Thyme Cheesecake

I got this lemon and thyme cheesecake to go. Oh (pause) my (pause) God (relief sigh)!!! Made myself some tea with milk and it was one of the most amazing pastries I’ve ever had!!! The attendant tempeted me with a very seductive pistachio donut and my guess is that it’s going to be just as good! I’m really upset that I only discovered them this evening and I leave tomorrow morning. For reference, 4.50€ for the cheesecake and 2.00€ for the donut, on October 2024.

2. Busy Bee Cafe Sliema

Website: busybee.com.mt

Address: 38 Triq Ix-Xatt Tas-Sliema, Sliema SLM 1022

Contact: +356 2334 4000 | [email protected]

Hours: Daily 8:00AM–10:00PM

Highlighting a rich legacy that spans decades, Busy Bee Cafe Sliema serves the community with an unmatched level of historical expertise and charm.

Their commitment to excellence shines through their custom coffee blends, crafted alongside expert roasters to deliver a signature flavor you simply can’t find at other cafes in Malta

Taking a seat to enjoy their lavish luxury high tea is an absolute delight. I still vividly remember savoring their flawless savory bites during a relaxed weekend visit.

They seamlessly transition from daily service to full-scale event versatility, adapting their catering to match the exact vibe of your chosen venue.

Busy Bee Cafe’s pastry selection deserves just as much praise as its coffee and catering.

Their display counters are packed with an impressive variety of freshly prepared cakes, traditional Maltese sweets, artisanal pastries, and indulgent desserts that immediately catch your attention the moment you walk inside.

Whether you stop by for a casual afternoon coffee or a full dessert outing, there’s a strong sense of craftsmanship behind every item they serve.

But while their menu is undeniably impressive, securing a large party order requires handing over the entire payment upfront rather than leaving a simple deposit.

And if any catered goods arrive damaged, you face a highly rigid 24-hour window to file a claim before losing any chance of resolution.

Pros

  • Interactive live food stations
  • Extensive dessert heritage
  • Diverse external venue options
  • Flexible corporate meeting spaces

Cons

  • Strict full upfront payment rules
  • Rigid 24-hour damage claim window

Great Coffee, Cakes, and Personnel

We always love going here every time we either (temporary) live on Malta, or just visit for a short holiday. This is one of the places we always come back to. Great cappuccino, ice cream, cakes and pastries. Lovely personnel always helping with a smile.

Exceptional Pistachio Cannoli Dessert Experience

If you are looking for an exceptional dessert experience in Malta, a visit to Busy Bee Cafe in Sliema is an absolute must.

The highlight of their menu is undoubtedly the pistachio cannoli. These signature treats feature a perfectly crisp shell filled with a light, fluffy pistachio cream and are generously topped with crushed pistachio pieces for an extra layer of texture. Beyond their famous cannoli, the cafeteria offers a vast selection of high-quality Maltese pastries, cakes, and artisanal sweets.

3. Lot 61 Coffee Roasters

Address: 30 Old Theatre Street, Il-Belt Valletta VLT 1234

Contact: +356 7984 1561 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday to Friday 7:30AM–6:00PM | Saturday to Sunday 8:00AM–6:00PM

Lot 61 Coffee fires up their roaster locally in Burmarrad twice a week, guaranteeing that every single batch distributed to customers is bursting with peak, uncompromised freshness.

They skip the cheaper alternatives by directly sourcing green beans from global farms during the current seasonal harvest. This ensures your morning cup captures the brightest natural profiles.

Their dedication to artisanal hand-roasting means they completely avoid automated shortcuts, treating each specific batch with a focused blend of science and craft.

Beyond just pouring a fantastic brew, they act as a major business-to-business (B2B) equipment supplier for leading Italian espresso machinery brands.

Their pastry selection is another major reason why so many visitors keep returning. Everything feels freshly prepared, from the flaky, sweet pastries to the rich cakes and baked treats lining the counters.

There’s a noticeable attention to detail in both flavor and presentation, giving the desserts a homemade quality while still feeling refined enough for a premium café experience.

However, keeping your pantry fully stocked requires strict attention to the clock, as missing their strict Monday afternoon ordering cutoff delays your beans by an entire week.

Additionally, their inflexible shipping schedule locks deliveries strictly to Wednesdays, meaning weekend restocks are entirely out of the question.

Pros

  • Premium Italian machinery expertise
  • Rigorous accessible quality control
  • Wide island delivery network
  • Comprehensive brewing equipment supply

Cons

  • Strict Monday 1:00 PM ordering cutoff
  • Inflexible Wednesday delivery schedule

Absolutely loved this place! The delicious pastries were fresh and full of flavor — you can tell they put real care into their baking. A big plus is the coffee they serve. It’s not just an afterthought — they use good quality coffee beans, and it really makes a difference. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick bite or lingering over a latte, this spot hits the mark.

Hours: Monday to Friday 7:00AM–6:00PM | Saturday 7:00AM–3:00PM

Refusing to modernize their core techniques, Ta’ Saminu Bakery boasts a historic kitchen that relies entirely on heritage wood ovens. This infuses their breads and pies with a distinct, rustic smokiness.

Their longstanding family legacy deeply ties them to the village community, carrying forward decades of passionate Gozitan baking traditions.

The focus here is on securing local ingredients directly from the island, which ensures that every recipe bursts with authentic, regional flavor.

Biting into one of their hot, savory pies straight from the stone oven immediately transported me back to the comforting, time-honored kitchens of my childhood.

If you want these incredible items sent to the main island, though, you have to carefully calculate your cravings to hit their strictly enforced minimum spend requirement.

And once your order is finally locked into their system, they flatly refuse to make any routing modifications or accept last-minute menu adjustments.

Pros

  • Extensive main island delivery area
  • High dietary ingredient transparency
  • Broad sweet and savory menu
  • Convenient drop-in collection option

Cons

  • Strict minimum spend for delivery

Local Bakery Find Near the Ferry

Tremendous find a few mins off the ferry. Lovely pastry, excellent bread and a delicious pastizz to boot. Friendly service for us visitors. Genuine local spot. Really cheap (€5 for 6x small pastries, loaf of bread and a pastizz). There is a small playground a couple of meters up the road, perfect for kids. Card payment possible.

Traditional, Family-Run Bakery on the Island

This is one of the last few traditional bakeries on the island. It’s easy to find as it’s on one of the villages’ main roads and there are always some people waiting outside for the next fresh oven bake. You will find lots to choose from, they have all sorts of local bread, pastries, etc. It’s a family-run bakery that goes back generations and they’re very passionate about their products. They have frozen goods that can be baked back at home, local type pizza and a vast variety of cakes including seasonal traditional pastries.

5. Manouche Craft Bakery & Bistro

Website: manouche.com.mt

Address: Spinola Park, SPK 1000, San Ġiljan

Hours: Monday 8:00AM–3:00PM | Tuesday to Saturday 8:00AM–10:00PM | Sunday 8:00AM–7:00PM

Drawing vibrant inspiration from old-school Parisian cafes and 1930s jazz, Manouche Craft Bakery & Bistro possesses a deeply soulful character that makes dining an atmospheric joy.

Their kitchen strictly relies on traditional hand methodology, completely rejecting modern shortcuts in favor of classic, old-world baking tricks.

I love how even with their heavy French influence, they maintain a fierce commitment to locally minded supply by purchasing raw goods directly from nearby farmers.

Their integrated operations perfectly link the bakery and restaurant sides, ensuring bistro guests always receive freshly pulled loaves with their meals.

I have to say that enjoying an afternoon tea here is phenomenal. But you have to be incredibly mindful of their unforgiving cancellation policy. It demands well over a day’s notice to avoid hefty fees.

You also can’t afford to run late; arriving past their strict twenty-minute grace period unannounced results in a full charge for the missed reservation.

Pros

  • Widespread island branch expansion
  • Highly atmospheric Parisian experience
  • Broad main island transport range
  • Special plant-based dietary accommodations

Cons

  • Unforgiving cancellation notice requirements
  • Strict arrival timing limits

Best Brunch, Lunch, and Pastries

The very best brunch and lunch place in the region. They offer such big selection of brunch dishes and they serve so fast and work very efficient. I love this place. Haven’t had that quality cappuccino for a long time. And the breakfast brioche buns just melt in your mouth, so soft and fresh. And oh my…the pastries and cakes they make….to die for honestly wow, so worth the money.

So overall very very good place, one of my new favourites for sure.

Vast Selection of Sweets and Pastries

The review doesn’t need much explaining, you can tell by the smile on my face and the takeaway in my hand to know that the experience was a solid 5 stars.

Very good selection of sweets and pastries for those with a sweet tooth and there’s something for everyone as the tastes and flavors that make their line of eats is vast.

Needless to say that I’ll be visiting again 😃
