Hours:

Monday to Thursday: 5:00 PM to 10:30 PM

Friday to Saturday: 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM and 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM

Sunday: 12:00 PM to 10:30 PM

Craving a genuine slice of southern Italy right in the middle of the capital can lead you to this cozy family-run gem. I Pupi Pizzeria serves up the true taste of Sicily by crafting spectacular wood-fired options alongside fresh, hand-rolled arancini.

When I tried their specialty pie, the smoky, blistered crust and rich toppings completely won me over.

The talented kitchen team is run by two passionate brothers, Valerio and Gabriele, who give the entire dining room a lovely, authentic vibe. They focus heavily on comforting regional classics that keep locals coming back for more.

You just have to plan your schedule carefully because they don’t open until 5:00 PM from Monday to Thursday, meaning you cannot grab a weekday lunch here. This makes it tricky for professionals working nearby who want a quick bite.

Pros

  • Authentic wood-fired selections
  • Traditional Sicilian arancini
  • Welcoming family-run atmosphere
  • Fresh high-quality ingredients

Cons

  • Closed for lunch on 4 days a week (Monday to Thursday)

I’ll come back

I had the gluten free pasta carbonara and it was really delicious. I can also recommend the risotto and my friends have liked the pizza a lot. If you want to make sure you find a seat you should book a table in advance. I’ll come back! Note: you don’t have to pay extra for gluten free which is really rare and super nice.

2. Pulcinella Pizzeria The Strand

pulcinella-pizzeria-the-strand

Website: https://pulcinellamalta.com/

Address: Gzira – 7, Triq Williams Reid

Contact: +356 2767 7046

Hours: Monday to Sunday 11:30 AM – 11:30 PM

You’ll find Pulcinella Pizzeria The Strand while walking along the vibrant waterfront. They satisfy cravings for an authentic, pillow-soft crust.

This bustling venue strictly follows traditional Neapolitan pizza-making methods, using a special dough process that delivers a crust that is crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. The aromatic scent of melting cheese hits you the moment you walk through the door.

The extensive menu features everything from classic styles to unique items like panuozzo, which is a flavourful ciabatta-shaped bread. They even offer a vegan mozzarella upgrade, making it an accommodating spot for plant-based diners.

However, opting for that specific vegan cheese swap adds an extra charge of €2.50 to your bill, which feels a bit steep for a single topping substitution. This extra cost can add up quickly if you visit with a large group.

Pros

  • Traditional Neapolitan dough technique
  • Accommodating plant-based options
  • Unique panuozzo bread available
  • Generous late-night operating schedule

Cons

  • Costly vegan cheese upgrade
  • Busy peak hours

Customer Reviews:

The pizza is very good indeed

This is a great place for genuine napolitan pizza. The place is informal, very good value for money, service speedy and attentive, and the pizza is very good indeed, as in Napoli. One of the best reasons to eat in Malta. We went there twice during our visit to the island and were equally pleased both times. Their special Halloween pizza is excellent!

3. Casa Sotto

casa-sotto

Website: https://zeroseimalta.com/stores/casa-sotto/

Address: 32, Archbishop Street, Valletta, Malta

Contact: +35621239958

Hours: Monday to Sunday: 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM

Finding a meal that satisfies your deep cravings without leaving you feeling completely weighed down can be a challenge. That’s why Casa Sotto is a must-visit, as they specialize in the Pinsa Romana, a highly digestible, light, oval-shaped ancestor of the modern pizza.

The crust is exceptionally airy because it uses a traditional mix of water, grains, and aromatic herbs. The kitchen tops these crisp bases with amazing gourmet ingredients like black truffle and creamy burrata.

I recently spoke with a regular diner who swore by their refreshing house label Birra Sotto, which is a completely vegan and gluten-free lager.

Just keep in mind that because they focus entirely on this historic oval style, you will not find any traditional round Neapolitan options here. This might disappoint purists who prefer standard circular pies.

Pros

  • Exceptionally light digestible dough
  • Specialty vegan gluten-free beer
  • Authentic Italian fried starters
  • Premium gourmet topping selections

Cons

  • No traditional round pizzas

Pizza Margherita was to die for

We were privileged to find a table since it is a quaint place with limited seating. Reservations recommended. My friend says the carbonara pizza was one of the best pizza she may have in her life. The house slow rosted pork option was incredible and my pizza Margherita was to die for.

It was one of the best pizzas we ate in our life

We found Casa Sotto as the chance to eat a good pizza and actually it was one of the best pizzas we ate in our life. So tasty, crunchy and even when it cools down a little, stays perfect. Very cosy restaurant, great and nice staff. Service is fast. Great value for money. I would return if I had more days in Valletta. Could not recommend more!

4. Bianco’s Pizza & Pasta

bianco-s-pizza-pasta

Website: https://www.biancos.info/

Address: St. George’s Street, St. Julian’s – Malta

Contact: +356 21 359 865

Hours: Monday to Sunday: Noon till late

Soaking in the beautiful coastal views of Spinola Bay makes any casual dinner feel like a special occasion. Bianco’s Pizza & Pasta beautifully pairs classic Mediterranean dishes with a local twist right alongside a relaxed bay view.

With over 12 years of experience operating in the local food scene, the team knows how to create a highly welcoming atmosphere. The cozy dining room provides a wonderful setting for families and close friends to unwind together.

They provide incredibly versatile dining choices, including quick weekday lunches and custom set menus for large group gatherings.

But because they lean heavily into distinct local flavours, the menu might not fully satisfy someone looking for a strictly purist, traditional Italian style. This layout can also feel a bit crowded during busy weekend rushes when tables fill up fast.

Pros

  • Beautiful Spinola Bay location
  • Over twelve years experience
  • Flexible group set menus
  • Cozy intimate indoor atmosphere

Cons

  • Non-traditional recipe variations
  • Can feel crowded during rushes

Customer Reviews:

The pizza was delicious

Great restaurant with a very friendly atmosphere. The service was excellent and the staff were very welcoming and attentive. The pizza was delicious and the burgers were also very tasty and well prepared. Everything was fresh and served quickly. Definitely a place worth visiting if you want good food and great service. Highly recommended!

Good dining experience

Had a Maltese Farmhouse pizza and shared a side salad. My wife had a margarita. The base tomato sauce was sweet and pleasant on the tongue. Dough was thin and light similar to what you get in Italy. The side salad was double what you often get in the UK, which is partly why we shared it. Staff were attentive but not intrusive.

5. Sally Port Pizzeria

sally-port-pizzeria

Website: https://www.sallyportpizzeria.com/

Address: St. Nicholas street, Valletta. VLT 1627. Malta

Contact: (+356) 2730 2222

Hours:

Monday to Thursday: 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM

Friday to Sunday: 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM

Exploring the steep, historic steps of the capital will definitely help you work up an excellent appetite. It’s worth tracking down Sally Port Pizzeria because they ferment their house-made dough for 48 hours to create a highly digestible and deeply flavourful crust base.

Each batch is prepared fresh daily using just flour, water, sea salt, olive oil, and yeast.

On top of that, they offer a daily happy hour from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM with buy-one-get-one-free cocktails. You even get complimentary traditional Italian nibbles to enjoy alongside your drinks while soaking up the local vibe.

The main downside is that this excellent cocktail special is strictly limited to that late afternoon window, so late-night diners miss out entirely. This short timing means you have to rush straight from work to catch the discount.

Pros

  • Long forty-eight-hour fermentation
  • Free traditional Italian snacks
  • Daily buy-one-get-one cocktails
  • Freshly made daily dough

Cons

  • Short happy hour window
