5 Best Asian Restaurants in Malta for Every Occasion

Menu Authenticity: I checked whether kitchens use traditional methods like live robata grilling and handmade dumpling folds. Real technique separates a memorable meal from a bland stir-fry.

Value for Money: I compared tasting menus and lunch specials against the food on the plate. A high price only makes sense if the portions and ingredients match it.

Atmosphere and Setting: I looked at whether each venue suits a quick midday bite or a romantic evening. A great meal falls flat in a noisy room or a cramped corner.

Dietary Flexibility: I noted which places clearly mark vegetarian plates and offer custom event menus. A group with mixed dietary needs shouldn’t have to guess.

Last month I craved a proper bowl of wok-tossed noodles and got sad takeaway boxes with no flavour beyond salty soy sauce.

Good Asian cooking does exist in Malta. It’s just buried among the many ethnic restaurants, so finding it takes some digging.

That’s why I narrowed the list to Asian kitchens and compared them on authentic cooking, value, setting and dietary choice.

Here are the best Asian restaurants in Malta, with what each one gets right.

How much does an Asian meal cost in Malta?

An Asian meal in Malta costs from €20 to €35 at a casual pub or street food spot to €60 to €85+ for a multi-course tasting menu.

Dining optionTypical price
Casual pub and street food€20 to €35

Multi-course tasting menu€60 to €85+

1. AKI – Japanese Restaurant & Cocktail Bar

aki-japanese-restaurant-cocktail-bar-logo

Website: https://akimalta.com

Address: Corner of Strait Street and Santa Lucia Street, Valletta

Contact: +356 7979 0292 | [email protected]

Hours: Sunday–Wednesday: 12:00 PM–11:00 PM | Thursday–Saturday: 12:00 PM–2:00 AM

Date night in the capital calls for a venue that feels special without feeling stiff. AKI is a Japanese restaurant and cocktail bar with a Michelin-recommended menu that pairs Tokyo flavours with Mediterranean ingredients.

The room delivers on that promise. It doubles as an art gallery, and an Austin Camilleri sculpture gives it a striking edge. Come evening, the space turns into a late-night lounge with an extensive Japanese whisky selection.

The food matches the setting. The kitchen runs a traditional robata grill, which adds a deep charcoal sear to the wagyu beef cuts.

If you’d rather keep the bill down, the weekday lunch is worth a visit. I stopped by, and the two-course set for €24 felt like a bargain.

The catch is a strict luggage policy, so you can’t bring suitcases inside. Children also get no tailored meal options.

Pros

  • Michelin-recommended dining experience
  • Charcoal robata grill
  • Affordable weekday lunch menu
  • Extensive Japanese whisky selection

Cons

  • No child-tailored meal options
  • Strict luggage policy

Amazing Birthday Experience and Delicious Asian Food

Went here with my girlfriend for my birthday and had an amazing time. We ordered the sushi platter, gyozas, bao buns, and dessert, and every dish was incredible. Some of the best Asian food we’ve ever eaten.

It’s definitely not the cheapest place, but you really do get what you pay for. The quality of the food was excellent, and the service was just as good.

We were looked after by Rajendra, he was friendly, had really good knowledge of every dish, and helped make the evening even more enjoyable.

2. Kuya Asian Pub

Website: https://kuyamalta.com

Address: 20, St. George’s Road, St Julian’s

Contact: +356 2713 6517 | [email protected]

Hours: Winter: Monday–Sunday: 11:00 AM–3:00 PM, 5:00 PM–11:00 PM | Summer: Monday–Sunday: 11:30 AM–4:00 PM, 6:30 PM–12:00 AM

Heavy spices and cold beer usually lead straight to a noisy street stall. Kuya Asian Pub flips that script with a Michelin Award held for five straight years and an energetic pub atmosphere.

They started as a food truck, and that fast-paced heritage still drives their lively service.

In the kitchen, the chefs fuse Asian recipes with local Maltese ingredients instead of relying on imports. Their rabbit adobo and local tuna tataki suit casual diners who want bold sharing plates.

The board also changes regularly, so regulars always have something new to try.

And for bigger groups, the upstairs event terrace gives you more space.

Just keep an eye on the clock, as they close completely for a few hours every afternoon.

Pros

  • Five consecutive Michelin Awards
  • Inventive local ingredient fusion
  • Regular menu updates
  • Dedicated upstairs event terrace

Cons

  • Closes for a few hours every afternoon

Fantastic Dishes Packed with Authentic Asian Flavors

Had a fantastic dining experience at Kuya Asian Restaurant. The standout dishes were definitely the Pork Adobo and the Yellow Curry. The Pork Adobo was rich, tender, and packed with authentic flavor, while the Yellow Curry was simply the best—creamy, aromatic, and perfectly balanced with just the right amount of spice.

The food was fresh, beautifully presented, and full of vibrant Asian flavors. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and the staff were friendly and attentive throughout the evening.

If you’re visiting Kuya, I highly recommend trying the Pork Adobo and the Yellow Curry. I’ll definitely be coming back

Authentic Southeast Asian Food and Exceptional Service

Super authentic southeast Asian food, well deserving of the Michelin recommendation. Rico graciously shared some of the best service we’ve had—personal, engaged, and the definition of hospitality. Thank you Rico and team. I wish I lived nearby so I could come back more often.

3. Amami

Website: https://amamirestaurant.com

Address: Marfa Road, Mellieħa

Contact: +356 2152 1156 | +356 7952 1156

Hours: Monday–Sunday: 12:00 PM–10:30 PM

Eating by the water often means paying a premium just for the view. Amami justifies their spot on the Mellieħa coast by pairing panoramic views of Għadira Bay with serious Japanese cooking.

The food holds up to the view. A friend of mine booked their weekend Infinity Brunch and raved about the unlimited, freshly rolled sushi.

The chefs mix top-grade local produce with traditional methods. You get clean sashimi alongside hot skewers from the robata grill, so raw and cooked dishes share one sitting.

If you’d rather go at lunchtime, a midday menu runs Monday to Saturday. That leaves a generous five-hour window for a scenic lunch.

Just be aware that a 9.5% discretionary service charge is added to your final bill automatically.

Pros

  • Panoramic Għadira Bay views
  • Unlimited weekend sushi brunch
  • Five-hour midday menu
  • Local produce sourcing

Cons

  • Automatic 9.5% service charge

Great Oceanside Dining and Wonderful Service

Nice experience in Amami next to the sea in a nice quiet dining place with Asian cousine. We ordered sushi and cocktails and were very satisfied.  The service was great and the personnel very polite. Highly recommended.

4. TORA

Website: https://tora.mt

Address: Tigné Seafront, Tas-Sliema

Contact: +356 7978 1410 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday–Sunday: 12:00 PM–12:00 AM

Finding a restaurant that handles complex dietary needs without fuss is a rare win. TORA marks vegan and gluten-free items clearly on the menu, so groups can order with confidence.

The food adds some theatre. The signature Peking duck is carved at your table, which suits diners who enjoy a show with their Cantonese roasts. Weekdays bring bottomless dim sum too.

The bar keeps that creative streak going with mythology-inspired cocktails that mix Chinese spirits with yuzu and jujube.

On top of that, you can enjoy it all with a view. TORA sits on the Tigné Seafront, with open views across the water to Valletta.

The frustrating part is that curated tasting menus need a two-person minimum, so solo diners must order à la carte.

Online booking is also capped at 14 guests.

Pros

  • Clear dietary labelling
  • Tableside Peking duck carving
  • Bottomless weekday dim sum
  • Mythology-inspired cocktail list

Cons

  • Two-person minimum for tasting menus
  • Online booking capped at 14 guests

5. TemptAsian Restaurant & Lounge

Website: https://temptasianmalta.com

Address: 9th Floor, AX The Palace, High Street, Sliema

Contact: +356 2133 3444

Hours: Tuesday–Saturday: 6:30 PM–12:00 AM

Picking one cuisine for a large group usually sparks a debate. TemptAsian avoids that by bringing Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Indian and Korean dishes under one roof.

They’ve held eight consecutive Silver Spoon Awards, which shows they balance regional flavours without losing quality.

Here, you can mix Japanese teppanyaki with rich Thai curries, which makes the menu a playground for pan-Asian food lovers.

The restaurant also sits on the ninth floor with skyline views over Sliema. You can head to the Lounge 360 rooftop pool deck for a pre-dinner cocktail.

The venue suits a major celebration too, since they also offer bespoke catering for large events.

The catch is that Lounge 360 only opens in warmer seasons, so winter visitors miss the open-air side. Set menus also need two diners.

Pros

  • Broad pan-Asian menu
  • Eight consecutive Silver Spoon Awards
  • Rooftop pool lounge
  • Bespoke large-event catering

Cons

  • Pool lounge opens seasonally
  • Set menus need two diners

Great Asian Fusion Setting with Superb Views

Highly recommend this restaurant if you’re into Asian fusion food. Great setting on the Ninth floor of the AX Palace Hotel, Sliema, with superb views over the bay and towards Valletta.

Extensive Asian menu with Japanese, Thai  and Vietnamese inspired cuisine. The food was  beautifully presented and flavoursome. The waiting staff were friendly and attentive, without being too intrusive.

Definitely recommend this restaurant if you’re staying in town.

Breathtaking Views with Pan-Asian Cuisine

The Tempt Asian Restaurant and its adjoining Lounge Bar are located on the 9th floor of the 5-star hotel The Palace in Sliema and offer a truly breathtaking view over the city and the harbor.

The restaurant mainly serves Pan-Asian and Japanese cuisine with a subtle Mediterranean touch.

We enjoyed the sushi overall; the quality of the fish was decent. Unfortunately, the sushi rice was a bit too mushy, but considering the reasonable prices, this was something we could accept. In the end, the stunning view more than made up for it.
