1. AKI – Japanese Restaurant & Cocktail Bar

Website: akimalta.com
Address: 175 Corner of Strait Street and Santa Lucia Street, Valletta
Contact: +0035679790292 | [email protected]
Hours: Sunday-Wednesday, 12:00 PM – 11:00 PM | Thursday-Saturday, 12:00 PM – 2:00 AM
At AKI, you get both great food and a lively atmosphere, where Michelin-recommended haute cuisine pairs up with live Disc Jockey (DJ) sets. This transforms a quiet dinner into an energetic night out.
Their kitchen sets itself apart by running an authentic charcoal robata grill alongside their sushi bar.
A friend of mine ordered their smoky grilled wagyu, and the sear balanced beautifully with a glass of their curated premium sake. Those pairings make this a top choice for fine diners seeking serious gastronomy.
The catch is that they don’t offer a dedicated children’s menu, forcing parents to order expensive à la carte plates for picky eaters.
Nevertheless, if you want an upscale, adult-focused evening in historic Valletta, this venue is the spot!
One of the best Japanese restaurants I have ever been to
One of the best Japanese restaurants I have ever been to (including the ones in Japan!). From the atmosphere to the food, everything was exceptional. We had the chance to come one a day when they had truffle wagyu beef tartare as a special dish, and it was exquisite. Do try it if it’s one the menu, definitely worth it. Rushabh was also very kind and attentive, we will be definitely coming back.

Highly recommend coming here
Visiting Malta from Canada. This restaurant was a 10/10 for us. Found it through the Michelin Guide and it lives up to the standards.
Our server was Asanka- he was amazing! Very attentive, respectful and always smiling.
Food was great. The sashimi omakase was very fresh. We also had the Wagyu and dynamite rolls which were also great.
Dessert was also amazing! Raspberry brûlée was fresh, light and not too sweet, just the way we like it.
Highly recommend coming here if you’re looking for amazing Japanese cuisine.

2. Amami

Address: Marfa Road, Mellieha
Contact: +356 2152 1156 | +356 7952 1156 | [email protected]
Hours: Monday-Sunday, 12:00 PM – 10:30 PM
Perched above Ghadira Bay, Amami delivers sweeping coastal views that turn a regular meal into a scenic escape.
Their team sources fresh Maltese ingredients daily, giving a local edge to traditional cooking methods.
If you have a massive appetite, their weekend Infinity Brunch solves the small-portion problem. Every Friday and Saturday afternoon, you can also order unlimited sushi and hot izakaya plates for a fixed price.
While many restaurants rush you through midday seatings, this kitchen keeps the lunch window open until five.
The downside is the automatic 9.5% discretionary service charge added to your bill, which unexpectedly bumps up costs.
The food was impeccable
This was a phenomenal way for me and my wife to celebrate our two year anniversary! The food was impeccable, salmon that melts in your mouth like nothing else, delicious combinations of sushi. The staff was super friendly and approachable, always happy to service too. Delicious cocktails too with Japanese twists.
The view of the waters and the city were marvellous and made the experience even more enjoyable.

I definitely recommend this restaurant if you enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine
My wife was craving Japanese food for dinner, so we chose Amami based on the great Google reviews. We didn’t have a reservation and the restaurant was full, but the staff kindly managed to find us a table. The pork dumplings and dragon rolls were perfect, and the chicken katsu curry was delicious, though very spicy! Overall, the food and service were excellent. I definitely recommend this restaurant if you enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine.

3. Okurama Asian Fusion

Website: okurama.com.mt/restaurant-asian-fusion
Address: Mishra Lourdes, San Gwann
Contact: +356 27863388 | +356 27811888 | [email protected]
Hours: Monday-Friday, 5:00 PM – 11:00 PM | Saturday-Sunday, 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM, 5:00 PM – 11:00 PM
Agreeing on a single menu is a nightmare when dining out with a large group. Okurama Asian Fusion’s expansive buffet model fixes that by offering cross-border dishes alongside traditional sushi.
With that, you and your friends can sample dozens of plates without racking up a massive bill.
Veteran Far East chefs run the kitchen, ensuring the hot teppanyaki items carry genuine flavours.
And just as a dedicated pizzeria relies on a proper stone oven, this team installed custom roasting hardware to master Hong Kong duck.
The trade-off for this massive variety is a slightly diluted Japanese focus, which might disappoint purists seeking strict authenticity.
Additionally, they stay closed for lunch on weekdays, so early diners must look elsewhere.
The food is delicious and very reasonably priced
We opted for the buffet, which offers an excellent variety of choices – both Sushi and other Asian dishes. The food is delicious and very reasonably priced. The restaurant itself is beautiful and exceptionally clean, creating a warm and welcoming dining environment.

4. Akira Asian Gourmet

Website: akira.com.mt
Address: Triq Dragunara, San Gilijan
Contact: 27055888 | Mobile: (+356) 77621888 | [email protected]
Hours: 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM, 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM
Akira Asian Gourmet offers prime access to the nightlife scene without compromising on flavour.
Their menu spans classic raw sashimi to hearty cooked stir-fries, keeping everyone satisfied.
The chefs take a modern approach, pairing time-honoured heritage techniques with fresh culinary twists. We actually dropped by for an evening meal, and the distinct regional flavours truly elevated the standard sushi rolls.
And since they run consistent lunch and dinner services all week, you never have to guess if the kitchen is open!
The main drawback is the location along Triq Dragunara, which gets loud with crowds and gridlock on busy evenings.
Still, if you plan to hit the town right after you eat, the convenience easily outweighs the noise.
The food is very nice
Absolutely amazing service, everyone is so nice, kind and helpful. The food is very nice, but not the best sushi I’ve had in Malta. The atmosphere is very uncommon for a Japanese restaurant, starting with decor to choice of music.
Nonetheless enjoyed our dinner very much ☺️

The sushi was absolutely top-notch
The sushi was absolutely top-notch—fresh, beautifully presented, and bursting with flavor. Every bite melted in my mouth, especially the chef’s special rolls, which were a delightful combination of creativity and authenticity. The sashimi was some of the best I’ve ever had, and the attention to detail in every dish was impressive.
A special shoutout to Laxmy, who provided the most friendly and attentive service! I made a special request, and she went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. Her kindness and professionalism truly made the experience even more memorable.

5. Club Sushi St. Julians

Website: clubsushimalta.com
Address: Ball Street, Paceville, Saint Julian’s
Contact: +356 27 331 555 | [email protected]
Hours: Monday-Sunday, 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM, 6:00 PM – 10:30 PM
As the island’s first spot dedicated specifically to Korean and Japanese dishes, Club Sushi St. Julians brings deep culinary roots to the table. This dual heritage gives diners access to two rich traditions under one roof.
Master chefs anchor the menu, focusing on traditional discipline and high-grade sushi presentation.
They set up the dining room as a cosy, romantic lounge, turning a casual dinner into an intimate date night.
Even better, guests who hate waiting on hold can use their streamlined digital booking system to confirm a table instantly.
The catch is that their takeout system restricts you strictly to self-collection, so you can’t get these rolls delivered to your door.
Definitely a place I’d recommend
Really great Japanese restaurant with a lot of good choices on the menu. Everything we tried tasted excellent and felt authentic. They also offer some Korean food options, which we didn’t get to try this time but will next visit. Definitely a place I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys quality Japanese cuisine!

I would totally recommend it
Very polite and kind service, the Korean dishes was great, and we tried additional Japanese meals also. I would totally reccommend it. Booking a table advised, because most of the time the restaurant is full.
